Marketing rescue for Ontario contractors

Ontario is Canada's most competitive trades market, so rescues here often start with wasted ad spend. Accuracy matters too, especially for electrical advertising and rebate claims.

Written by Ali Sedighi, MBALast updated:

Ontario has Canada's largest and most crowded trades markets, and that shapes what a rescue looks like here. Most Ontario owners who contact us have spent real money on ads in the GTA or Ottawa and can't connect it to booked work, or they've discovered their ad account and tracking numbers sit with a provider. The recovery order is the usual one, but in Ontario we often look at the ad account first, because that's where money is leaking every day.

Ontario's markets and the cases we see

Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Markham and Vaughan form one enormous, competitive region. Ottawa, Hamilton and London are large markets in their own right, and dozens of mid-sized cities and towns sit between them.

In the GTA, contractors often serve parts of several municipalities, which makes service areas and ad targeting complicated. Rescued accounts commonly show money spent on suburbs the crew rarely drives to, and on searches unrelated to the trade. Outside the big cities, the more common problem is a Google listing or domain held by someone who's moved on.

Seasons and scheduling a rescue

Southern Ontario's winters are cold but moderated near the Great Lakes, and Northern Ontario's are longer and harsher. Heating trades face a sharp autumn and winter rush; exterior trades crowd into spring and summer.

Heating, plumbing and electrical businesses should finish recovery by early autumn. Roofing, landscaping and exterior renovation businesses are better rescued over winter, so the repaired site and relaunched ads are ready for the spring quoting push.

Regulators, licences and registries

A repaired website should name the right bodies for your trade and reflect licence rules accurately. We link and summarise only.

  • TSSA regulates fuel work and pressure equipment. For gas and oil trades, the useful point for marketing is that fuels work is reserved for TSSA-registered contractors employing certified technicians, so credentials pages should describe that accurately.
  • ESA licenses electrical contractors. Because Ontario limits bidding on and advertising electrical work to ESA-licensed contractors, a rescued electrician's ads, listing and site copy all need to be consistent with the licence.
  • Skilled Trades Ontario handles trade certification.
  • The Ontario Business Registry holds your registered name; keep it on file for listing verification and consistency.
  • Consumer Protection Ontario and WSIB are the other provincial bodies customers may check.

Program pages, as of October 2026

Ontario had no federal affordability agreement as of 2026-10-22, but it does have active provincial-utility programs that heating trades often mention.

The Home Renovation Savings Program, run by Save on Energy and Enbridge Gas with provincial support, offers rebates on single or bundled upgrades, including cold-climate heat pumps. Save on Energy also runs an income-eligible Energy Affordability Program.

On a repaired site we describe these in plain terms, date the page, link the administrators and avoid fixed figures. If an old page still promotes the federal Canada Greener Homes Grant, which stopped taking new applicants in February 2024, it comes down.

A GTA scenario, in numbers

Picture a [trade] company in [City] paying $4,000 a month in ad spend through a provider's account. The search terms report, once you can see it, shows clicks from towns 60 kilometres away and searches for apprenticeships. If a quarter of the spend is irrelevant, that's $1,000 a month you can redirect to the areas and jobs you actually want, before changing anything else.

How we'd approach an Ontario rescue

  1. Stop the leak. In the rescue audit, we review the ad account's search terms and locations first.
  2. Recover the ad account, domain and listing through official routes. See account and domain recovery.
  3. Repair service-area pages by municipality, licence-aware copy for regulated trades, and current program content.
  4. Restart paid search with tight targeting, then build local SEO by municipality as part of a clean restart.

Frequently asked questions

I'm an electrician. Does my rescued website need anything special?

Yes. Ontario reserves both doing and advertising electrical work for others to ESA Licensed Electrical Contractors. We make sure the site, listing and ads are consistent with that, but confirm the details with ESA.

Why is GTA ad spend so often wasted?

Clicks are expensive, service areas are complicated and many searches are for jobs or DIY tips. Without a clean negative keyword list and tracking you can see, spend leaks quickly.

Can I promote Home Renovation Savings rebates?

You can describe the program and link to Save on Energy's official page. Avoid fixed figures that may change, and tell customers to confirm eligibility with the program.
