Alberta contractors usually come to us for one of two reasons. Either a Calgary or Edmonton business has spent heavily on ads with nothing traceable to show for it, or a regional company has lost control of the Google listing that brings in most of its winter calls. Either way, the order is the same: get the accounts back, then fix what the website and ads say.
Alberta's markets and why rescues look different in each
Calgary and Edmonton are large, crowded markets where paid search for common trades is expensive. Wasted ad spend hurts quickly there, so a rescue often starts with the search terms report rather than the website.
Around them, Airdrie, St. Albert and Strathcona County behave almost like separate towns in how people search, and Red Deer, Lethbridge and Wood Buffalo are regional centres with fewer competitors. In those smaller markets, the Google listing is often the business's main source of work, and recovering it comes first.
Winter timing and when to schedule recovery
Alberta's winters are long and continental-cold, and chinook winds can swing southern Alberta from deep freeze to thaw in a day. Those swings produce sudden bursts of calls for frozen pipes, ice damage and heating failures.
That means a heating, plumbing or electrical rescue should be finished well before the first serious cold. If your listing or tracking numbers are held elsewhere, early autumn is the latest sensible start. Exterior trades with a short summer season should schedule their rescue in late autumn or winter, so the repaired site is ready for spring quotes.
Regulators and rules a repaired site should respect
We link and summarise only; confirm your obligations with each body.
- Alberta's safety codes system covers building, plumbing, gas, electrical and several other disciplines, with permits issued by accredited municipalities or the provincial authority.
- Apprenticeship and Industry Training oversees certification. In compulsory trades, a journeyperson certificate or registered apprenticeship is required, which is worth stating accurately on a credentials page.
- Prepaid contracting. Businesses that take money before finishing the work and solicit or sign the contract away from their usual premises need a prepaid contractor licence and must post security, under the Consumer Protection Act. If your marketing includes door-knocking or home shows, Alberta's consumer protection office is the authority.
- Business name registration runs through authorized registry agents. Keep your registered name handy; your Google listing should use it.
- WCB-Alberta handles workers' compensation.
Program claims to check on your website
As of October 2026, no province-wide Alberta home heating rebate appeared on official sources, and Alberta had no federal affordability agreement. That makes Alberta websites especially likely to carry stale program claims.
- The federal Oil to Heat Pump Affordability grant closed to Alberta applicants on 2026-07-31. Remove or update any page that still promotes it.
- The Clean Energy Improvement Program offers property-tax financing for upgrades, but only in participating municipalities. If you mention it, name the municipalities and link the official list.
We handle this in website repair: dated, linked, and written so it doesn't need rewriting every season.
A typical Alberta case, in numbers
Picture a [trade] company in [City] spending $3,000 a month on ads managed elsewhere. In the audit, the search terms show roughly a third of that spend going to towns the crew doesn't serve and to job-seeker searches. Excluding those can free about $1,000 a month before anything else changes, which is often enough to pay for the rescue work while the listing and domain are being recovered.
How we'd approach an Alberta rescue
- Audit spend first in Calgary and Edmonton, listings first in regional centres. See the rescue audit.
- Recover the domain and Google listing through official processes, with an eye on duplicate listings created for cities you don't operate from.
- Repair service-area pages by drive time, not just city name, and correct program claims.
- Restart with cold-snap campaigns ready to switch on quickly, as part of a clean restart.

Frequently asked questions
Does Alberta's prepaid contractor licence affect my marketing?
It can if you sell away from your usual place of business, such as at the door or a home show, and take payment before the job is finished. Alberta's consumer protection office is the place to confirm whether it applies to you.
Should Calgary and Edmonton have separate Google listings?
Only if you genuinely operate from both places. A second listing without a real location breaks Google's guidelines and can lead to suspension. Otherwise, use service-area settings and separate website pages.
Can I still advertise the federal oil-to-heat-pump grant in Alberta?
No. NRCan lists 2026-07-31 as the last day to apply in Alberta, so any page still promoting it should be updated.
